Podcast Episode 1: Supporting Highly Sensitive Children

The Highly Sensitive Child – When Perception Isn't Taken Seriously

In this post, we dive deep into a topic that affects many highly sensitive people: how childhood experiences – especially when high sensitivity and the resulting heightened perception were not taken seriously – influence our psychological well-being in adulthood.

“You are too sensitive !" – The invisible message behind it

Do you know the feeling that your sensations and impressions were often dismissed as "too much"?

If our highly sensitive perception is repeatedly devalued as a child, we often learn not to trust ourselves anymore.

We begin to see ourselves through the eyes of others, to diminish our own needs and goals – and to struggle with feelings of shame, guilt, or inferiority.

How early injuries manifest later

This can manifest in very different patterns:
– Resignation
– Rebellion
– Strong need for control
– Fears

And sometimes we ignore the warning signs of our body for so long that a burnout stops us.

Developmental trauma as a quiet consequence

These experiences can leave deep scars – and in the worst case, lead to developmental trauma or other psychological burdens. They creep in, often unnoticed – but they have an effect. And they shape how we feel, think, and act today.

How best to deal with highly sensitive children?

The most important step when your child is highly sensitive:
Take his perception seriously.
Don't judge. Don't relativize. Listen instead.

Highly sensitive children need:

– Security through emotional clarity
– Space for retreat without pressure
– Support in dealing with intense emotions
– Adults who don't "discipline", but understand

The earlier children experience their sensitivity as a strength, the sooner they can build self-confidence – and develop healthily.

Even as adults, we can come back to ourselves

But it's not too late even in adulthood.
We can learn to appreciate our perception again, set boundaries, and treat ourselves with love.
It is a path of realization – and it leads to more relief, stability, and hope.

I am Sandra Quedenbaum – coach, trainer, and educator with a focus on high sensitivity and trauma.

For almost 20 years, I have been supporting parents and professionals in accompanying highly sensitive children – in the form of coaching, courses, and training.

As a kindergarten teacher and social pedagogue, I view the topic from both a pedagogical perspective and – as the mother of a highly sensitive child – from a practical, heartfelt viewpoint.

This is how I help to recognize high sensitivity and find a loving, mindful approach to sensory openness – so that a stable, loving connection can arise, grow, and be strengthened.
