How highly sensitive people hear

HSPS usually have good hearing. They hear a pin drop. Their hearing ability covers all frequencies. And with this sensory channel, too, this ability is both a blessing and a curse. For many HSPS, their sense of hearing causes the greatest difficulties.

Many Highly sensitive people are sensitive to noise. The sound of a siren hurts physically. Vacuum cleaners and hair dryers are often too loud, especially when others use them. People who speak loudly are exhausting for them. Even though they themselves sometimes tend to speak louder when overstimulated.

They hear visitors coming long before the doorbell rings. It is difficult for them to have a serious conversation when the radio is playing in the background. The noise of a busy street makes them nervous. When several people talk at once, it is hard for them to concentrate on an individual's voice.

The buzzing of insects often hurts their ears. They find it easy to distinguish vocal nuances and thus deduce the mood of the person speaking.

Highly sensitive and hearing – typical examples:

  • Sabine always turns off the radio when parking because otherwise she gets nervous.
  • Nadine does not play an instrument, yet she hears precisely when someone misses a note while singing or an instrument is played incorrectly in an orchestra.
  • Armin is sitting at the breakfast table and the radio is on. If he is asked a serious question, he has to turn off the radio. It is the only way he can concentrate on his answer.
  • Hanna (10) has to write a dictation. The scratching sound of a classmate's pen is unbearable to her. Because of this, she cannot concentrate and performs worse on the assignment.
  • The ticking of the analog clock at work drives Erik crazy. At home, he only has digital clocks.
  • The buzzing of some speakers or the whining of some electrical devices in standby mode is unbearable for Stefan.
  • Claudia is played a minimal snippet of a song. She immediately knows what song it is.
